Who the Outlander DPS 1000 is for

Riders who want the most capable ATV they can buy, whether that means long trail days in the mountains, serious towing or getting across big properties quickly. It’s also for experienced riders coming from older, smaller quads who want a real step up.

What’s new for 2027

For 2027, Can-Am renamed the 82-hp Outlander 850 as the Outlander 1000, a better match for its 999cc V-twin. The 101-hp 1000R carries over. Select XT and Backcountry packages can now be ordered with Can-Am’s 10.25-inch touchscreen, and every Outlander uses the pDrive primary clutch.

Outlander DPS 1000 vs. Outlander XT 1000

The XT adds a winch, upgraded bumpers and more exterior protection. If you’d add those anyway, the XT usually costs less than buying them separately. If you’d rather choose your own accessories, the DPS is the cleaner starting point.

Common questions

1000 or 1000R: do I need the extra power?

The 1000’s 82 hp is already more than most riders use. The 1000R’s 101 hp is for riders who want the fastest acceleration available or plan to tow and climb at the limits. If you’re unsure, the 1000 is the practical choice.

Who can ride a Outlander DPS 1000 in Virginia?

Virginia limits riders under 16 to ATVs of 90cc or less, so this is an adult machine. Every rider must wear an approved helmet, and ATVs aren’t allowed on public roads except to cross one by the most direct route.

Can I carry a passenger?

Not legally. Virginia prohibits passengers on an ATV unless it’s designed and equipped for more than one rider, and this one is built for one. If you want to ride two-up, look at the MAX version.
